Lafayette Fire Chief Robert Benoit, who’s a Louisiana Fire Chief Hall of fame inductee garnishes yet another achievement. The Hall of Fame honor was bestowed upon him a year ago. Over the weekend, Benoit assumed the title of President of the International Association of Fire Chiefs – Southwestern Division.

First responders, loved ones say final goodbye to Baton Rouge Fire Department captain killed in drowning

Family, friends, and other first responders paid their respects to a Baton Rouge fire captain Wednesday, Oct. 9. Bryan Bozeman drowned Saturday, Oct. 5 during a fishing accident. The Baton Rouge Firefighters Association is collecting donations in his honor. “Bryan was full of life and loved helping others,” states a Facebook post from BRFD memorializing Bozeman.

St. George Professional Firefighters Association issued a letter on Friday morning stating their support of the incorporation of the City of St. George. The letter states, in part, "We have been asked “If the City of St. George passes, will there be any negative effects to the St. George Fire Department?” The answer is emphatically, NO.

Update: Police say woman set fire to mother’s Baton Rouge home after argument

Police have arrested a woman accused of setting fire to a home where six people lived. Erica Mitchell, 29, is charged with simple arson for allegedly setting fire to a home at 4443 North Foster Drive on August 1. Investigators say Mitchell started the fire around 9:40 p.m. after getting into an argument with her mother who lived at the house.

Cross missing from burned historic Opelousas church

A large cross has disappeared from the wreckage of an African American church in Louisiana that was burned down in an arson case. News outlets report the white fiberglass cross belonged to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Opelousas. It was one of three historic churches set ablaze in arson attacks earlier this year.

Shreveport: Fire chief swears in 2nd African-American woman as battalion fire chief

The Shreveport Fire Department has sworn in its second-ever African-American female battalion chief. According to a release from the Shreveport Fire Department, Fire Chief Edwin Scott Wolverton swore in Lisa K. Ivory as Battalion Fire Chief at a ceremony on Wednesday evening. Chief Ivory has been in the department for 29 years, and she is the second African American woman to hold the position of battalion chief in the history of the fire department.

Firefighters respond to fire at Shreveport apartments

Around 4:40 Thursday morning firefighters responded to a laundromat fire at the 2600 block of Jewella. Ten fire companies were dispatched to the scene and after 33 minutes the fire was placed under control. Four apartments were adjacent to the laundromat and had to evacuate. One apartment was affected.

Suspected drug house in Carencro goes up in flames

At 12:24 p.m. Tuesday, Carencro Fire Department Officials say they responded to 725 Potier Road for a house fire. On arrival, it took firefighters about 15 minutes to get the fire under control before it spread to nearby structures. The home was a known drug house and was unoccupied at the time with no utilities, fire officials said.

Follow Up: 4 firefighters taken to hospital after battling tugboat fire in Lafitte

Four firefighters were sent to the hospital on Tuesday after battling a tugboat fire in Lafitte. The tugboat caught fire around 6:30 a.m. After five hours of battling the blaze, smoke could still be seen coming from the engine room of the tugboat. All four firefighters are doing well after suffering from heat exhaustion, according to the Lafitte fire chief.

Five cats killed in Baker house fire

Officials say several pets died in a house fire in East Baton Rouge Wednesday morning. The Central Fire Department, which assisted in the call, says the fire was reported around 9 a.m. on Gov Davis Drive. The Brownsfield Fire District was called to the scene and had the fire extinguished a short while later.

Firefighters battling tugboat fire in Jean Lafitte

Authorities are battling a fire on a tugboat that had docked in Jefferson Parish Tuesday morning. A spokesperson for the Jefferson Parish Fire Department said the fire started after 6 a.m. in the 3000 block of Jean Laffitte Blvd in Jean Lafitte, La. Witnesses told Eyewitness News that heavy smoke can be seen high in the air in the area near the fire.

Fire causes moderate damage to front of Shreveport house

Fire damaged a Shreveport residence Monday evening. Firefighters were summoned to the single-story, wood-frame house on Prospect Street at 5:03 p.m., Caddo 911 dispatch records show. Fire and smoke were visible at the front left corner of the dwelling when the first crew arrived on the scene between Centenary Boulevard and Alexander Avenue, a Shreveport Fire Department spokesman said.

Students learn fire safety from Lafayette Fire Department during National Fire Prevention Week

On Monday, October 7, students gathered at the Central Fire Station on East Vermilion Street in Lafayette to learn about fire safety. The classes are being hosted by the Lafayette Fire Department from October 7 through October 18 to students in kindergarten and first grade. National Fire Prevention Week began on Sunday, October 6 and will continue until Saturday, October 12.

Former New Iberia Fire Chief Ronnie Borque has died. The New Iberia Firefighters Association posted on Facebook Saturday about his passing, saying that they were "saddened by the sudden passing" of the chief. Borque served in the department for more than 40 years.
