Shreveport fire battles industrial building fire

On Saturday, Shreveport Firefighters were called to the 700 block of North Market at Shaw Alloy Piping for a possible industrial building fire. At 6:43 a.m., Shreveport fire got a call from workers at the facility. Thirteen fire units and 31 firefighters responded to the emergency. Firefighters say when they arrived, they saw smoke showing from a vent stack on top of the building.

Fire damages family's Lafayette home

The Lafayette Fire Department responded around 8:30 this morning to a house fire in the 100 block of St. Charles St. Emergency dispatchers received a call from a neighbor indicated heavy smoke coming from the home. Firefighters arrived at the home within five minutes, where flames were coming from the front door and windows.

Pilot told tower of problems before plane crash near New Orleans' Lakefront Airport

The pilot of a small plane in a deadly crash near New Orleans’ Lakefront Airport radioed the control tower shortly after takeoff about unspecified problems and sought clearance to return, federal investigators said Saturday. The pilot and an award-winning television journalist aboard were both killed in the crash Friday afternoon.

Lightning strike may have caused house fire near Gillis

Firefighters are investigating a house fire that may have been caused by a lightning strike. Ward 1 Fire Chief Kent Buller says shortly before 5 p.m., they were called to a house fire in the 1000 block of Wilderness Ln. on reported smoke and fire coming from the attic of a home, due to a lightning strike.

1 dead in Vidalia trailer fire

Authorities are on the scene of a trailer fire in Vidalia that killed a person, according to the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal Friday morning. The fire call came in from the 100 block of Clark Drive around 3 a.m. this morning. Paramedics discovered a deceased person inside of the trailer. Details are limited at this time.

Zachary firefighter killed in crash while driving to work

A Zachary firefighter was killed in a crash early Friday morning when his vehicle struck a tree that had fallen across the road. Zachary Fire Chief Danny Kimble said the firefighter was on the way to work, driving his normal route in his personal vehicle. The crash occurred on La. 38 in St. Helena Parish sometime before 6 a.

Arson investigation underway following Lafayette fire

The Lafayette Fire Department is investigating an arson following a fire Wednesday night on St. Charles Street. Lafayette firefighters say they responded to a house fire Wednesday night around 10:00 pm in the 300 block of St. Charles. The fire was initially reported as a vehicle fire in a garage. When firefighters arrived, the occupants of the garage apartment were outside.

Lafayette Fire: One with minor smoke inhalation; residential fire ruled an accident

The Lafayette Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 200 Dublin Circle in Lafayette this evening at around 6:20 p.m. LFD Public Information Officer Alton Trahan said that upon arrival, firefighters found smoke coming from a townhouse and that occupants were inside the home. The fire was in the kitchen and was extinguished quickly.

State seeks death for mom accused in baby's burning death in Natchitoches

Louisiana is seeking the death penalty for a woman charged with first-degree murder in the death of her 6-month-old son. The Alexandria Town Talk reports the state has filed notice to seek death for Hanna Nicole Barker over the July death of Levi Cole Ellerbe. Barker was arrested last month about a week after she reported Levi had been kidnapped by men who pepper-sprayed her.

City of Baker considers creating fire prevention bureau to help lessen property insurance rates

The Baker City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to introduce an ordinance that would create a fire prevention bureau. Baker Assistant Fire Chief Keith Pease explained that the federal government now requires cities to establish fire prevention bureaus in order to receive points toward their fire rating, which is used to calculate property insurance rates for both businesses and residences.

Louisiana Firefighters' Retirement System, Baton Rouge returns 3.9% for fiscal year

Louisiana Firefighters' Retirement System, Baton Rouge, returned a net 3.9% in the fiscal year ended June 30, an investment report for the $1.7 billion pension fund shows. The return falls short of the policy benchmark return of 6.1% for the year, according to the report. For the three, five and 10 years ended June 30, the pension fund returned an annualized net 8.

Two arrested for setting fire to home in Eunice trailer park

Two men have been arrested for setting fire to a neighboring mobile home located in the trailer park they live in. 21-year-old Logan Bertrand and 18-year-old Carlos Juan Flores were booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail for one count each of Simple Arson and Criminal Trespass. According to the State Fire Marshal's Office, in the morning hours of August 13, the Eunice Fire Department requested the SFM Office's assistance in determining the origin and cause of a trailer fire located in the 1000 block of North 2nd Street.

State sees drastic decrease in wildfires over past decade

Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) has seen a drastic decrease in wildfires over the past decade for various reasons. According to records, LDAF firefighters battled and suppressed 1,638 wildfires in 2008. In 2018, LDAF firefighters suppressed 676 wildfires in Louisiana. “We believe there are multiple factors that have contributed to the significant decline in wildfire occurrence throughout Louisiana,” said Commissioner Mike Strain, D.

Truck carrying house strikes power line in Scott, sparks fire

A truck carrying a house struck a power line and the home caught fire in the 700 block of Old Spanish Trail Monday afternoon. The roadway was closed for several hours but has now been opened. After the fire was extinguished, the house was moved from the roadway. The building will be demolished Tuesday mornings.

The former president of the Vacherie Volunteer Fire Department used $56,500 in department money for personal purposes over a two-year period, a new investigative audit says. Jacolby Octave deposited thousands of dollars in cash into his personal accounts, according to the Louisiana Legislative Auditor's Office.

One killed, another taken to burn unit after house fire in Pointe Coupee Parish

One person is dead and other was injured in an overnight fire in Pointe Coupee Parish. Firefighters were called to a house fire in the 9800 block of Island Road in Ventress around 2:30 a.m. Friday. Officials say the body of a male occupant was discovered inside. Another male occupant was found severely injured and taken to a burn unit in Baton Rouge.

Lafayette will look into charging homeowners in unincorporated areas for fire response

Seven people were rudely awakened Thursday morning as firefighters battled a blaze at a vacant house next door. A spokesperson for the Baton Rouge Police Department says firefighters responded to a single-family house located at 2353 Convention Street just before 3 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8 to find the house fully engulfed in flames.
