Der wegen Missbrauchs minderjähriger Mädchen angeklagte US-Unternehmer Jeffrey Epstein hat sich in seiner Gefängniszelle in New York offenbar umgebracht. Er sei am Samstagmorgen gegen 6:30 Uhr von Mitarbeitern der Einrichtung gefunden und in ein Krankenhaus gebracht worden, teilte das Gefängnis in Manhattan mit. Dort sei er schließlich für tot erklärt worden. Die Bundespolizei FBI untersuche den Fall. Eine Reihe von US-Medien, darunter die Nachrichtenagentur AP, berichtete unter Berufung auf anonyme Quellen, Epstein habe sich das Leben genommen.

Der Skandal um den in der amerikanischen Elite bestens vernetzten Unternehmer bot seit seiner Festnahme Anfang Juli reichlich Zündstoff: Die Staatsanwaltschaft in New York warf dem 66-Jährigen vor, Dutzende minderjährige Mädchen missbraucht zu haben. Der Geschäftsmann habe zwischen 2002 und 2005 in New York und Florida einen illegalen Sexhandelsring aufgebaut, hieß es in der Anklageschrift. Einige der Mädchen seien erst 14 Jahre alt gewesen und mit großen Summen Bargeld angelockt und dazu verleitet worden, weitere Mädchen heranzuschaffen. Die Ermittler berichteten, sie hätten bei Durchsuchungen in Epsteins Anwesen in Manhattan Hunderte Nacktbilder gefunden.

Epstein hatte die Vorwürfe zurückgewiesen und auf nicht schuldig plädiert. Der Termin für den Prozessbeginn war vorläufig auf den 8. Juni 2020 festgelegt worden.

Der Ex-Investmentbanker war 2008 einem Bundesverfahren wegen Missbrauchsanschuldigungen nur deshalb entgangen, weil er damals einen Deal mit der Staatsanwaltschaft eingegangen war. Er bekannte sich schuldig, Klienten mit minderjährigen Prostituierten versorgt zu haben, und saß eine Gefängnisstrafe von 13 Monaten ab - teils unter gelockerten Bedingungen. Im Gegenzug wurde ihm ein Verfahren vor einem Bundesgericht erspart. Dieser Regelung hatte der damalige Staatsanwalt in Florida, Alexander Acosta, zugestimmt - nach den neuen Vorwürfen gegen Epstein war er daraufhin von seinem aktuellen Amt als US-Arbeitsminister zurückgetreten.

Der 1953 in New York geborene Epstein zeigte sich immer wieder gerne mit Stars und Politikern in der Öffentlichkeit, flanierte über Rote Teppiche und posierte breit lächelnd für Fotografen. Auch über die US-Elite hinaus galt er als bestens vernetzt. In US-Medien kursierten zahlreiche Namen von Prominenten und Politikern, zu denen er enge Beziehungen unterhalten haben soll.

Auch US-Präsident Donald Trump distanzierte sich von Epstein. Er habe vor langer Zeit ein Zerwürfnis mit ihm gehabt und sei kein Fan von ihm gewesen. In einem Interview mit dem «New York Magazine» beschrieb Donald Trump Epstein dagegen im Jahr 2002 als «großartigen Mann». Damals sagte der noch nicht politisch aktive Immobilienmogul: «Es wird sogar erzählt, dass er schöne Frauen genauso mag wie ich. Und viele von denen sind eher von der jüngeren Sorte.»

Nach der Festnahme entschied ein Richter in Manhattan, dass Epstein bis zum Beginn seines Prozesses im Gefängnis bleiben muss, weil er eine «Gefahr für andere und die Gemeinschaft» sei. Die Staatsanwalt hatte vorher ins Feld geführt, die Fluchtgefahr sei sehr hoch. Epstein besaß zahlreiche Anwesen weltweit und ein eigenes Flugzeug. Epsteins Verteidigung hatte dagegen gefordert, den Unternehmer für eine hohe Kaution im zweistelligen Millionenbereich in seinem Anwesen nahe des Central Parks in Manhattan unter Hausarrest zu stellen.

Es scheint sich nicht um den ersten Suizid-Versuch Epsteins gehandelt zu haben. Während US-Medien in den vergangenen Wochen immer neue Details des Falles an die Öffentlichkeit brachten, hatte sich Epstein bereits Ende Juni Berichten zufolge in seiner Gefängniszelle selbst verletzt - Hinweise deuteten auf einen Suizidversuch hin. Es blieb zunächst unklar, ob das Gefängnis nach diesem Vorfall eine zusätzliche Wache eingesetzt hatte, um eine Wiederholung zu verhindern.
