Reports of flooding due to heavy rainfall have surfaced in Brooklyn, particularly in the area of Carroll Street and Fourth Avenue.

The New York City Emergency Management Twitter account warned Kings County drivers to use alternate routes due to the flooding.

“Due to flooding conditions, expect extensive #traffic delays in the area of Carroll Street and Fourth Avenue in Brooklyn. Use alternate routes,” read a tweet posted at 4:55 p.m.

Twitter user @BayAreaJulie posted a video taken by friend Adrienne Zhao showing the flooding at the scene. The video shows cars splashing through water that nearly consumed their wheels, while other vehicles were stranded in the water.

Speaker Corey Johnson tweeted about the flooding at Carroll Street and Fourth Avenue and mentioned other areas in the borough that are also under water.

According to Johnson, there is also flooding at Wallabout Street and Throop Avenue, as well as at Brooklyn Avenue and Park Place.

Subway commuters have had a rough night as well, with numbered train lines once again suffering loss of service in Brooklyn.

1. New York and Brooklyn from Michael_Novakhov (111 sites): Brooklyn Eagle: Evening flash floods in Brooklyn render city streets impassable

After a weekend of scorching, muggy heat, the sky finally opened up on Brooklyn, unleashing torrents of rain on the borough — all captured by the Brooklyn Eagle’s staff of course.

The sudden deluge Monday evening turned the street outside the Eagle’s Dumbo office into a Venice-like canal (Italy vacation canceled). The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning to Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn.

While the MTA did not announce any rain-related delays in trains in Brooklyn, an assault on a conductor at Borough Hall (someone allegedly spat in the conductor’s face) was slowing 4 and 5 trains in the evening. The transit agency also reported delays on the F, G, and 2/3 lines due to signal issues.

There was (more than) a bit of water in the stations.

And on the streets.

The flash flood warning continued well into the evening, as the office of Emergency Management tweeted that a flood advisory would be in effect for Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island until 10:45 p.m. Monday night.

Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted out that city agencies were responding to reports of flooding in Gowanus streets.

Good thing there were no events at Barclays Center on Monday — because the entrance to the stadium looked like this:

Stay dry — and safe — out there, Brooklyn!

This is their story.

In a fast and furious engagement, Solomonson and Marks took out eight more tanks, six with Mavericks and two with cannon fire.

The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II was designed for close air support (CAS) of friendly ground troops, attacking armored vehicles and tanks, and providing quick-action support against enemy ground forces. It entered service in 1976 and is the only production-built aircraft that has served in the U.S. Air Force (USAF) that was designed solely for CAS. Its secondary mission is to provide forward air controller – airborne (FAC-A) support, by directing other aircraft in attacks on ground targets. Aircraft used primarily in this role are designated OA-10.

The A-10 was used in combat for the first time during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, destroying more than 900 Iraqi tanks, 2,000 other military vehicles and 1,200 artillery pieces.

(This article by Dario Leone originally appeared on The Aviation Geek Club in 2019.)

As the ground war slipped into its second day, with allied tanks and troops rolling across the desert sands, the venerable A-10A ‘Warthog’ continued to prove its low-tech mettle against Iraqi armor. There were dozens of anti-tank sorties on the morning of Feb. 25, but one which stood out was flown by a pair of A-10A pilots who set a record of sorts, as explained in the book Gulf Air War Debrief. A large column of Iraqi tanks was rolling south from areas occupied by the Republican Guard. Captain Eric Solomonson and Lieutenant John Marks of the 76th TFS/23rd TFW scrambled to engage them.

The Global Security News
The Global Security News: 1. Russia from Michael_Novakhov (116 sites): Voice of America – English: New Zealand Announces New Round of Gun Restrictions

New Zealand on Monday unveiled the second round of restrictions on gun ownership in the aftermath of a deadly shooting at two mosques in Christchurch earlier this year.

The new rules include establishing a gun registry, banning gun purchases by foreign visitors, and requiring gun owners to renew licenses every five years, instead of every 10.

The proposed changes will “enshrine in law that owning a firearm is a privilege” rather than a right, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said.

Wellington moved swiftly after the attacks in March that killed 51 people and wounded dozens.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern speaks to the media during a Post Cabinet media press conference at Parliament in Wellington on March 18, 2019.
New Zealand Announces Assault Weapons Ban in Wake of Christchurch Mass Shootings

Nearly one week after 50 Muslim worshippers in Christchurch, New Zealand were gunned down, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern imposed an immediate ban on all military-style semi-automatic and automatic assault rifles.

The ban, which Prime Minister Ardern announced Thursday in Wellington, includes high-capacity magazines, which can hold multiple rounds of ammunition, and accessories that can convert ordinary rifles into fast-acting assault rifles.

Six days after the attack, Ardern announced a ban on semiautomatic weapons, including the type used by the gunman in the attacks.

Since then the government has launched a buyback program to compensate people for the outlawed semi-automatics, and has collected and destroyed more than 3,200 weapons. The gun buyback and amnesty runs until December.

Police Minister Stuart Nash said the new law would allow police to monitor people’s social media accounts to determine whether they were fit to own weapons.

“What we do know is that the Christchurch terrorist was engaged on some sites which were promoting some pretty horrific material,” Nash said. “So that’s one thing police will have the ability to assess when they determine if someone is fit and proper to have a firearms license.”

The new legislation is expected to be introduced into the Parliament next month. After that, it will be subject to three months of public feedback, before it is voted on by lawmakers.

The Global Security News: 1. US Security from Michael_Novakhov (88 sites): The National Interest: The Horrific Story of a SR-71 Blackbird Refueling Gone Wrong

Dario Leone

Technology, Americas

https://www.dvidshub.net/image/756534/sr-71-lasre

Tragic.

“Out of nowhere, the nose gave a small pitch down and a hard pitch up. I pushed the stick quickly forward, but the nose and canopy struck the bottom of the tanker. The nose section was gone just forward of the cockpit and the canopy had caved in on me. I thought, ‘I’m inside the tanker; death is imminent!’

The SR-71 would be a very short-ranged aircraft were it not for air refuelling, limited to around 2,000 NM. Multiple air refuellings extended the range of the aircraft to the limits of crew endurance. Many missions have exceeded 12,000 NM. Forward basing of the SR-71 and KC-135Q tankers permitted faster response, shorter range, shorter duration missions, fewer air refuelling, and greater overall efficiency.

KC-135Q crews and their aircraft were unique from the rest of the Air Force in several ways. Their aircrews in fact were the only one certified in Blackbird’s specific radio-silent rendezvous procedures, and their boom operators were the only ones qualified to refuel the SR-71. The Q-model tankers had special plumbing between their fuel tanks, allowing them to transfer JP-4 and JP-7 fuel between various tanks. Their engine could burn transfer JP-4 or JP-7 fuel. If the SR-71 landed somewhere JP-7 fuel was not available, the Q-model tankers flew in with the fuel and, through the use of transfer hoses on the ground, were able to refuel the SR-71. One of the best advantages of flying the Q-model tankers is that their crews did not have to be on twenty-four-hour alert status like the rest of the SAC’s tankers’ crew members.
